Our Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PHSCE)

Intent 

At Haslingfield Endowed Primary School, PSHCE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHCE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. PSHCE is taught across the school from Reception- Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school, we follow the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme.

Our PSHCE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.  Weaving through the heart of our PSHCE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core values; respect and tolerance, determination and perseverance, empathy and kindness, honesty and responsibility, aspiration and excellence and independence and co-operation 

Implementation 

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision, which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, and to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year-by-year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.  At our school, we use the Primary Personal Development Programme, which includes a complete curriculum programme for PSHE and Citizenship from Reception to Year 6. This curriculum programme is set out on four age-specific entitlement Frameworks showing progression in four strands - Citizenship, Healthy & Safer Lifestyles, Myself & My Relationships and Economic Wellbeing.

The children cover a range of different topics over a two-year rolling programme. In addition to this programme, staff are encouraged to lead circle time and PSHCE sessions planned and linked directly to what the children need and are experiencing at that time. Classes record their PSHCE journey through whole class floor books.

PSHCE is an important part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. During these assemblies, there is a weekly focus and celebration of our core values. 

Impact 

By the time, our children leave Haslingfield School they will have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere. The y will have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships with their peers and adults both now and in the future. Our children will develop strategies and have a deeper understanding of how to manage their emotions and be able to understand how to look after their mental health and well-being.

The children will have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society, recognise, and apply the British Values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty. Our children will have a strong understanding of the physical and emotional aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level to them.
